Players often lose time not because they lack ability, but because they target the wrong level. They spend months contacting leagues that will not consider the profile while ignoring competitions where they could earn ice time and build stronger statistics. A realistic assessment starts with evidence.

Europe is a pyramid, not one league

Each European hockey market contains several divisions with different budgets, speed, roster rules and import requirements. Sweden, Finland, Germany, Czechia and Switzerland have deep systems; Norway, Denmark, Austria, Slovakia, France, Poland and the Netherlands have their own pyramids. The difference between one country’s second tier and another country’s first tier may be smaller than the league names suggest.

The first question is therefore not “Which country do I want?” It is: Which playing level matches my current profile?

Five factors in a realistic assessment

Use a range, not one dream league

A responsible assessment produces a range of two or three levels: where the player could be an impact signing; where the player could compete for a regular role; and the upper limit worth targeting if timing and roster need align. Countries and clubs are then selected within that range, taking account of passport, position, budget and recruitment timing.

The presentation must support the target: a clear resume, current video and targeted outreach, as described in our club search guide.

Signs that the target is wrong

Moving down one level is not automatically a step backward. Regular ice time and a strong season can create a better route than sitting on the bench at a higher level.

Use EHA’s comparison tools

For a first orientation, use the level calculator, which considers current league, production, age and passport. The European leagues database provides a broader comparison of competition levels and import accessibility. Both tools are orientation only; club needs and official rules must still be checked.
