1. Define the starting point

Record the current league, team, position, age, role, production and availability. Separately list citizenship, any second passport, the current contract and where the playing rights sit. A market cannot be selected honestly without these facts.

2. Build a verifiable profile

  • a current Elite Prospects profile;
  • recent-season statistics with a clear role;
  • highlights and at least one full game;
  • a one-page hockey resume;
  • contract status, citizenship and availability date.

3. Select realistic countries and leagues

A country name does not define the level. Compare pace, physical demands, age, position, production and import status. Use the Hockey countries directory and European leagues reference as orientation rather than a list of guaranteed vacancies.

4. Identify the right recipient

The message should reach the person responsible for the sporting roster: a sporting director, general manager or coach, depending on the club. Verify contacts on the official club site. Sending the same message to unrelated clubs shows that no selection was made.

5. Make a short proposal

The first message needs position, age, current league, citizenship, contract status and links to the profile and video. Explain why the level and role fit that particular club. Large attachments and a long biography make the first decision harder.

6. Verify every response

Confirm the legal club name, league, role, salary or compensation, housing, insurance, contract duration, termination terms and responsibility for transfer and work documents. Do not pay for a “guaranteed contract” without a verifiable legal basis.

7. Separate sporting and legal processes

Club interest is not registration. The IIHF international transfer, national eligibility and the right to stay and work in the country are separate checks. Review the visas and transfers section.

When an agent can help

An agent can add value through an evidence-based level assessment, a stronger player package, relevant market selection and negotiations. An agent cannot honestly guarantee a club decision. Put services, price, duration and termination conditions in writing before starting.

FAQ

Can a player find a club without an agent?

Yes. Direct outreach is possible when the level is assessed correctly, the profile is complete and terms are verified. An agent can help with assessment, targeting and negotiation.

How many clubs should a player contact?

There is no universal number. A short relevant list is more useful than mass outreach across mismatched levels.

Does a tryout invitation guarantee a contract?

No. An invitation, a tryout, registration and a signed agreement are separate stages.
