Video is one of the main evaluation tools for a European club. Statistics need context; video lets a coach assess decisions, skating, role and habits directly. The answer to “highlights or a full game?” is both — because the formats serve different purposes.
What highlights are for
Highlights are the first filter. Their job is to earn enough interest for the coach to open a full game.
- Length: about three to four minutes. A long compilation is less likely to be watched completely.
- Put the strongest relevant shifts first. The first minute determines whether the viewer continues.
- Show more than goals. Forwards should include forecheck, puck protection and defensive work; defencemen should show first passes, gap control and one-on-one play; goalies should show traffic management, rebound control and different types of saves.
- Identify the player. Add the jersey number and colour or use a short marker before each sequence. The coach should never have to search the frame.
- Use recent footage. The latest completed season is useful; video from several years ago needs an explanation.
Why a full game matters
Highlights show peaks. A full game shows shift-to-shift behaviour: play away from the puck, defensive recovery, positioning, decisions after mistakes, discipline and performance late in the game. When a club becomes seriously interested, it will usually want longer unedited footage.
- Prepare one or two recent full games against credible opposition.
- Use the ordinary game broadcast without music or montage.
- If possible, select a game with substantial ice time and a representative role.
How to host and label the video
- YouTube with an unlisted link, Veo or Hudl can work. The key requirement is that the link opens without a password or account request.
- Use a clear title: player name, birth year, position and season.
- Aim for at least 720p. A stable league broadcast is more useful than unstable phone footage from the stands.
- Avoid music and effects. Slow motion and repeated edits take time away from the hockey evidence.
- Place the links in the hockey resume and make sure the identity and season match Elite Prospects.
Common mistakes
- A compilation contains only goals and no defensive or off-puck work.
- Footage is selected only from weak opposition while the player targets a stronger adult league.
- The link is private or requires the coach to request access.
- The player sends a profile with a promise that video will be added later.
