Hockey in Czechia: leagues, imports and work rules

League structure

The EHA league reference currently lists the following senior levels for Czechia:

• Tipsport Extraliga — elite top division
• Chance liga — professional second level in the EHA reference
• 2. liga — third senior level with regional groups

The federation publishes separate junior and youth competitions across national age levels. Check current names, format and eligibility each season.

Comparing levels

Level matters more than the country name. Clubs compare pace, role, age, production, video and the quality of the player’s previous competition.

Where imports are realistically considered

The labels below come from the EHA league reference and describe general market openness. They do not prove a current vacancy or a guaranteed import place.

Age and citizenship

Junior players are assessed on development potential, age eligibility, expected ice time, education and housing. Senior players must show a role they can perform immediately. Citizenship affects registration and employment administration, but not the sporting standard.

EU versus non-EU passport

An EU/EEA passport can simplify the employment route in EU/EEA markets. A third-country national usually needs additional residence or work formalities. The club must confirm the route before travel and registration.

Transfer, registration, visa and work

1. Transfer: an international move normally follows the current IIHF transfer process.
2. Registration: the receiving club confirms federation and competition requirements.
3. Residence: non-EU/EEA players need a lawful basis for their intended stay.
4. Work: the contract and immigration status must permit the proposed sporting activity.

The Czech Ministry of the Interior’s official foreigners portal publishes visa, residence and third-country-national routes.

When clubs build rosters

The main roster-building window is generally April to August. Individual needs may appear later because of injuries, budget changes or roster corrections. Prepare the profile before the market becomes active.

Stats and video clubs need

• current Elite Prospects and verifiable statistics;
• team, league, role, special-teams usage and availability;
• a short recent highlight video with clear identification;
• full-game or full-shift footage;
• citizenship, contract status and realistic target level.

A club should be able to understand the player’s level and role quickly.

EHA cases

EHA places players across European markets and publishes only cases that can be shown honestly. Review the general EHA cases. A previous transfer is not a guarantee for another player.
