Hockey in Norway: leagues, imports and work rules

League structure

The EHA league reference lists these senior levels:

• Eliteserien — top senior division in the EHA reference
• 1. divisjon — second senior level

The federation publishes national U20 and U18 competitions. Check current names and groups in the official schedule.

Comparing levels

Level matters more than the country name. Clubs compare the player’s pace, age, role, production, video and previous competition.

Where imports are realistically considered

These labels reflect general openness in the EHA league data. They are not proof of a current vacancy.

Age and citizenship

Junior players are assessed on development potential, eligibility, education, housing and expected ice time. Senior players need a role they can perform immediately. Citizenship affects administration, not the sporting standard.

EU versus non-EU passport

An EU/EEA passport may simplify the employment route. A third-country national usually needs additional residence or work formalities confirmed before travel.

Transfer, registration, visa and work

1. Transfer: an international move normally follows the current IIHF transfer process.
2. Registration: the club confirms federation and league requirements.
3. Residence: the player needs a lawful basis for the intended stay.
4. Work: the contract and immigration status must permit the activity.

Norway is in the EEA but not the EU. Third-country nationals should verify the work-immigration route with UDI.

When clubs build rosters

The main roster-building window is generally April to August. Individual needs can appear later because of injuries, budget changes or roster adjustments.

Stats and video clubs need

• current Elite Prospects and verifiable statistics;
• team, league, role and availability;
• recent highlights with clear identification;
• full-game or full-shift footage;
• citizenship and contract status.

A club should understand the player’s level and role quickly.
