Hockey in Latvia: leagues, imports and work rules

League structure

The official LHF calendar includes these senior levels:

• Optibet Hokeja Līga (OHL) — the top senior championship administered by LHF
• 1. līga — the second senior level

Latvia also runs a national children and youth championship, including U18. Check the current-season calendar for group names and competition format.

Comparing levels

Level matters more than the country name. Clubs compare pace, age, role, statistics, video and the quality of the previous league.

Where foreign players are considered

Foreign players appear in official LHF rosters and statistics, but that does not prove a current vacancy or identical conditions across clubs.

Age and citizenship

Junior players are assessed on development potential, eligibility, education, housing and expected ice time. Senior players need a role they can perform immediately. Citizenship affects administration, not the sporting standard.

EU and non-EU status

Latvia is an EU member state. EU/EEA citizens generally have a simpler route to lawful residence and work. Third-country nationals are subject to separate employment, visa and residence-permit rules.

Transfer, registration, visa and work

1. Transfer: an international move normally follows the current IIHF process.
2. Registration: the club confirms LHF and league requirements.
3. Work: a third-country national may need a visa or residence permit carrying the right to employment.
4. Residence: a residence permit is generally required for stays exceeding 90 days.

Latvia's migration authority states that a visa carrying the right to employment must be obtained before entry when the activity is employment. The exact route depends on nationality, duration and contract.

When clubs build rosters

The main roster-building window is generally April to August. Individual needs can appear later because of injuries, budget changes or roster adjustments.

Stats and video clubs need

• current Elite Prospects and verifiable statistics;
• team, league, role and availability;
• recent highlights with clear identification;
• full-game or full-shift footage;
• citizenship and contract status.

A club should understand the player’s level and role quickly.
