A tryout, employment and an official game are different

A tryout invitation is not an employment contract and does not guarantee an offer. Permitted activity depends on nationality, country, entry status and the nature of the activity. Visitor entry must not be assumed to authorise paid work.

What the club invitation should contain

• the club's full legal name and contact details;
• the player's name, location and exact dates;
• a description of training, testing and any proposed scrimmages;
• who pays for travel, accommodation, meals and insurance;
• the responsible contact person;
• a clear statement that the outcome is not guaranteed.

Checks before travel

1. whether the planned activities are permitted under the entry status;
2. whether insurance covers hockey training and injury;
3. whether registration or an international transfer is required for a scrimmage or official game;
4. who arranges accommodation and return travel;
5. how and when the club will communicate its decision.

Red flags

• advice to enter as a tourist and arrange work later without an official check;
• a fee for a guaranteed contract;
• no verifiable club contact or written invitation;
• a request to surrender the original passport to an intermediary;
• a promise of official-game participation before registration.

After a successful tryout

Before paid work or official games begin, the parties should agree the contract, transfer and registration in writing and confirm an appropriate legal basis for residence and work. Each process is completed by its responsible authority.
