League structure and pathways

Selected comparison pathways:

  • NHL / AHL / ECHL — professional routes
  • NCAA — college hockey
  • USHL — USA Hockey Tier I junior
  • NAHL — USA Hockey Tier II junior

USA Hockey identifies the USHL as Tier I and the NAHL as Tier II. An international NCAA player needs separate academic and athletics certification through the Eligibility Center and institution.

Level matters more than the country name. Systems cannot be compared by division names alone.

Where international players are considered

These labels do not confirm an opening or replace regulations.

NHL / AHL / ECHLSelective

Access depends on level, role, regulations and an actual opening.

04

Age and player status

Junior routes require checks on age, eligibility, education, housing and development. Senior routes focus on role, production, experience and readiness.

05

Passport and eligibility

Citizenship affects immigration, registration and sometimes import status. It does not guarantee a place or replace league or academic requirements.

06

Transfer, registration, visa and work

  1. Transfer: an international move normally follows the current IIHF process.
  2. Registration: the club or institution confirms the applicable rules.
  3. Documents: the purpose of travel must match the visa or status.

Professional employment may use, for example, the P-1A classification for athletes who meet its criteria. It is not a general visa for every player; the petition, evidence and eligibility must be checked with the club and qualified counsel.

07

When clubs build rosters

Timelines differ across professional, junior and college systems. Prepare early; later needs may appear but are not guaranteed.

08

Stats and video clubs need

  • Elite Prospects and verifiable statistics
  • current team, league, role and availability
  • recent video and full shifts
  • citizenship, education and contract status
09

EHA cases

EHA publishes only supportable cases. A previous result does not guarantee another player a contract.

Official sources and update date

Updated: July 2026.

Is an international transfer normally required?

A move between national associations normally uses the current IIHF process; the club and federation confirm the exact steps.

Does a passport guarantee a place?

No. Passport status affects paperwork but does not replace sporting assessment or league eligibility.

When should a player apply?

Much roster work happens in spring and summer, but timelines differ by league.
